Aresti Late Harvest Gewurztraminer Reserva 2007

Iron Chef asked last week for some more reviews of value priced wines - and now he has answered his own plea. (Well, value priced for a desert wine, anway). Too bad it wasn't a winner - but for the rest of us, a tip on wines to avoid is as important as a tip on ones to buy.

--- Iron Chef's Review ---

An odd wine. Thick and sticky without the alcohol.
Nose of Spicy fruit- very Gewurzty and honey honey honey.
The palate was sugary with Pineapple and Citrusy notes and heavily textured. But most of all it felt clumsy and over ripe. There must have been a ton of residual sugar. It represents a lot of what I don't like in wines- bombastic and sweet without the structure or refinement. Not enjoyable.

  1. What about the botrytis? It is hard to imagine getting a LH wine with the distinct piercing sting of the noble rot for under $15. Good acidity, moderate alcohol (13.5%) when compared to some modern Sauternes, and lots of sweetness for sure.

I served this at a high-end dinner a few years ago against Nobel One (sauterne clone from Australia) and a real Sauterne and it held it's own very well.

Try it with a nice pear flan with Gorgonzola shavings....Yum.

  2. Yes I agree, try it with a pear flan with Gorgonzola GUATANTEED TO DROWN OUT THE NASTY TASTE. This wine is awful

  3. Not sure you understand what a late harvest wine is... its suppose to be sweet, over ripe (hence late harvest)and syrupy that's the idea.
Yes there's lots of sugar, its a LATE HARVEST wine, its stays on the vine longer and hence has more sugar... wow, people who don't know about wine should criticize other peoples hard work.

This is a great product for a entry level desert wine, great with sweet deserts like the flan mentioned above (try with a cheese cake with a lavender maple syrup... really brings out the floral aspect of Gewurzt.
