Tormaresca Torcicoda 2004

This wine is 100% Primitivo (not Aglianico, as the ANBL website says), from the Salento IGT (the heel of the Italian boot). It has delightfully aromatic nose of caramel and toasted marshmallows. Unfortunatelythe palate doesn't follow through on what was promised by the nose; it is clean but short, without a lot of interest.

Price: $26.79

Score: 87
Alcohol: 14%

  1. This is the fun part of individual preferences. I found the Tormaresca to have a very similar aroma notes as you described, but the palate really set it apart for me. The taste of leafy Tobacco, blue berries and a mahogany wood were well integrated. The tannins were smooth and the alcool was restrained- a first for this grape. But unfortunately there are good examples of the Italian Zin at $9-12 rather than the sticker shock on this one. I would tend to rate this high- 88-92, but its value it would be 1/5. I had this wine with CMacdonald on the day he told me of this blog.

  2. Your description makes me want to try it again. But I think I'll try the Masseria Maime first.

Are any of those $10 Italian Zins you mentioned available in NB?

  3. The Canaletto Primitivo di Puglia UPC #8003545993686 $11.49 was always a dependable example- it maybe on Liquidation as we speak. The Primitivo I Monili used to be here for about $12, but now you would have to drive to SAQ, but its worth the drive. CMac do you remember the I Monili

  5. The most remarkable thing about this wine for me was that it reminded me of California Zinfandel....a first for me when trying Primitivo. Looking back, I think...smells like Zin but its not jammy and on the pallet there was a noticeable acidity rarely achieved by Cali Zin. I liked it but I liked it even more with a little bit of food.

  6. On a slight related note, Montreal based Joe's Wine blog has an enthusiastic review of the '04 Donnafugata Tancredi, which is also available at ANBL. I'm putting it on my list of wines to try.
