Chris MacDonald has provided this information about an upcoming Pio Cesare wine event. The wine list is fantastic. I haven't tried the Piodelei, but the Fides is one of my favourite wines, and the 2001 Ornato is the best wine I've ever had. The vintages aren't specified, but the Barolo Classic, the Ornato and the Il Bricco have all scored consistently in the 94-96 from Wine Spectator in recent years.
Here are the details, as provided by Chris:

At the dinner last night we were able to try the 2003 vintage of both the Ornato and the Classic Barolo. The Classic was just that...very traditional in style...dark fruit, a little smoky and mildly floral on the nose with unforgiving tannins and a long finish...very young. On the other hand the, the Ornato was very fruity, extremely appealing and ready to drink. I held up both glasses to Augusto Boffa and asked what was responsible for the difference in these wines and said without hesitation french oak barriques. The Ornato juice has seen a lot more thaen the Classic. Both are great wines.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. We would have loved to have gone, but we're going down to Moncton today for the Wine Expo and then on Sunday for a bike race - three trips in three days was just too much. We'll spend the money on a bottle or two of the Ornato. BTW, what year of the Ornato was it? the '03? And how was the Il Bricco?
ReplyDeleteAlso, did you ask about the drinking window for the Ornato? I have a number of bottles of both that and the Il Bricco '01 in my cellar.
ReplyDeleteThe Ornato was the '03. It is so good right now that i would not hesitate to open one of my bottles tomorrow if it was the right occasion.
ReplyDeleteEven though the Ornato is made in an immediately appealing style, I think it will last a few years (5-8). I don't think it will get better (how could it?) but only change.
One last note from me on the dinner....the pairing of the night was the Lobster and fennel Aranchini Balls with the Piodilei Chardonnay.
