Thanks to Chris for recommending a reasonably priced Bordeaux that I actually liked. It has beautiful balance and an excellent mouthfeel, with a mineral structure and tannins that are just right - firm but fine. The nose is subdued and the palate is similarly reserved, though with a hint of chocolate on the finish. Perhaps it will improve, but for now I'll give it 88.
Wine Spectator gave it 86, while Parker apparently (I don't subscribe) gave it 88-90. The Brondeau is 70% Merlot, 20 % Cab Franc and 10% Cab Sauvignon.

I tried this a few days ago - I have to say, the extra couple years definitely improved it. The mouthfeel was light but very full, and the nose has grown over time - stronger notes of red fruits and some mahogany scents. Finish was very smooth. I'd bump it up to a 90+ now.
ReplyDeleteA wine merchant here in France propose the chateau de Brondeau 2009 "primeur" for... 5 euros a bottle ! Of course, you have to add the VAT, which make a price of 6 euros...

ReplyDeleteNothing to read on his site, but you have the adress and phone number. Located in north of France, this merchant is visited by many english amateurs.
Had the 2009 Brondeau...It's good but needs a few years to make it a truly luscious find.
